Fat Reducing Grills

One of the single biggest myths of indoor grills has to do with those that advertise to be "fat reducing". I know this may be controversial, but once you read the facts I believe you will agree.

First, this is not a slam against ball of the George Foreman grills. In fact, Foreman grills are among the best indoor electric grills made. The issue is with the advertising.

We have all seen the commercials about grilling away the fat and lean, mean cooking. We are led to believe that they eliminate the fat and are the way to healthy cooking. So what is the real story? How much fat do they remove versus pan or griddle frying food?

Recently, Consumer Reports did a test on this subject by cooking hamburgers with 20% fat. One was cooked in a pan, while the other on a Foreman grill. The results? What may amaze some people is that there was virtually no significant difference between the two.

If you look closely at the box on Foreman grills you will see a disclaimer that their grills reduce fat by 4% more than pan-frying. Such a small reduction is virtually meaningless.

Using "fat reduction" in their advertising has helped propel sales to millions of grills being sold over the years. And while it is a healthy way of cooking foods, there are virtually no differences between cooking a Foreman grill and cooking on other grills or griddles.
